Apple iPhone Duo: the first foldable iPhone, $1,999, on sale October 23
“The most transformational change to iPhone since the original”, in the words of Apple CEO John Ternus.
Apple iPhone Duo: two displays, one aspect ratio
The inner Super Retina XDR panel measures 7.6 inches at 1878 by 2670 pixels and 430 ppi, under a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and plays down the crease. The 5.4-inch cover display runs 1398 by 2034 at 460 ppi, and Apple says it delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.
What separates this from other folding designs is that both panels share one aspect ratio, so content scales between them instead of jumping. Both run ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, support Always On, and peak at 3000 nits outdoors.
A FaceTime camera sits under the inner display and disappears when it is not in use. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support arrives later this year, on either display.
Titanium, and a hinge built from more than 100 parts
The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover in a contrasting micro-blasted finish. Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front with 3x the scratch resistance of the previous generation, and Ceramic Shield covers the back.
The hinge itself is engineered from more than 100 components that control opening and closing and support the centre of the panel. Inside, support ribs stiffen the structure and antenna splits carry ceramic fibre inserts.
The inner display gets a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer up to 40 percent stiffer than materials the industry normally uses, high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, adhesives that let the layers glide past one another like the pages of a book, and a titanium plate at the bottom.
IP68 on a folding phone
iPhone Duo is rated IP68, to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529. That leading 6 means complete protection against dust, which no Samsung foldable has reached: Galaxy Z Fold8 still stops at IP48.
Fine dust is the traditional enemy of this category because it works in through the hinge gap and settles under the panel. This is the first time full dust sealing has been claimed on a phone of this shape.
The same A20 Pro that ships in iPhone 18 Pro
A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process: a 6-core CPU with 2 super cores and 4 efficiency cores, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth.
The number that belongs to this device specifically is sustained performance, up to 35 percent better than iPhone 17 Pro. A chip package inspired by M-series silicon connects A20 Pro directly to a custom vapor chamber, and a new display engine drives both panels at once.
Two 48MP cameras, and modes only a fold allows
The 48MP Fusion Main sits at 26 mm with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and zero shutter lag. It defaults to 24MP and can be pushed to 48MP, and it feeds a 12MP optical-quality 2x Telephoto with a 4x optical-quality zoom range.
The second lens is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm, ƒ/2.2 and a 120-degree field of view, the same unit as on iPhone 18 Pro, and it handles macro. On the cover sits a 12MP Center Stage front camera that shoots landscape without rotating the phone.
The fold unlocks camera modes no other iPhone has. Duo Preview puts the live preview on the cover display so the subject can frame themselves, Smart Take fires the shutter on its own once everyone is posing, Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the cover screen to get children looking at the lens, and Duo FaceTime lets the people beside you join the call on that same screen.
Video tops out at 4K120 in Dolby Vision on the Fusion Main.
Split View puts two apps on an iPhone for the first time
This is the first iPhone that opens two apps side by side. It also opens two windows of the same app, such as Safari, saves pairs of apps to return to, and swaps between them quickly.
iOS 27 moves controls to the side rather than the bottom so vertical space goes to content: Lock Screen controls, the Dock, and app navigation. Open the device and it shows two Home Screen pages with Today View on the left. The Dynamic Island is redesigned to sit vertically along the side of both displays.
Netflix, Zoom and Slack have already adapted to the folding layout.
Two batteries, 44 hours of video on the cover screen
There is one battery in each half, and energy rebalancing algorithms let them behave as a single cell. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback on the cover display, up to 31 hours on the inner display, and up to 24 hours of usage when both are used equally.
Charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 60W adapter, or 50 percent in around 30 minutes over MagSafe or Qi2, capped at 25W. Apple does not publish battery capacity in milliamp hours for any of its phones.
eSIM only, everywhere
There is no SIM tray in iPhone Duo in any market, and the space it would have taken went to the battery. The phone runs two active eSIMs and stores eight or more.
Wireless duty falls to N1, Apple’s own networking chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, alongside the C2 modem, which supports mmWave in the U.S. The USB-C port carries DisplayPort and USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s.
Price and dates
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in four capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The two colours are star white and night sky.
Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions including the UAE, with availability from Friday, October 23. Another 28 countries follow on October 30. The phone ships with iOS 27.1.
Accessories: the iPhone Duo Case at $79 in two colours, and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at $129 in two colours. Both work with MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W.
